Presented by English Touring Opera
Director Seb Harcombe conjures a Jacobean night-world in Dido and Aeneas, where the abandoned Dido’s call to ‘remember me!’ haunts in Henry Purcell’s melodies.
Priest-composer Giacomo Carissimi made a series of short musical dramas, depicting Biblical scenes where humans wrestle with God. Using Carissimi’s sensuous music, Bernadette Iglich directs Jonas, the story of Jonah and the whale.
I Will Not Speak showcases the music of prince-murderer-composer Carlo Gesualdo. Eight singers perform his most intense madrigals in a landscape of shadows and candle-light.
Sung in English (Dido and Aeneas), Latin (Jonas) and Italian (I Will Not Speak) with English surtitles.
