Gala Lunchtime Concert Series
Described by The Crackmagazine as creating ‘a sound one can absolutely luxuriate in,’ and by Jazz Northeast as ‘music which sounds unfailingly fresh’, the Newcastle based Riviera Quartet aim to capture the essence of early 1960s Dizzy Gillespie/Lalo Schifrin on the French Riviera with original compositions that draw as much from AC Jobim as they do from Horace Silver, but with a contemporary twist. The mission statement: to bring the combined energy of Bossa Nova, Blues and Bebop to new listeners and to build a broad audience. Imagine driving along the highway from Nice to Monaco, or even Los Angeles to Monterey, in a convertible – this is the music you would listen to.
The lineup consists of American trumpet/flugelhorn player and vocalist Pete Tanton, with Mark Williams, guitar; John Pope, bass; Russ Morgan, Drums. This quartet is a meeting ground for a blend of interests which range from free-form improvisation to straight – ahead jazz. The interplay between the trumpet and guitar has been likened to the Jim Hall/Tom Harrell pairing. Morgan and Pope complete what has become one of the most in-demand rhythm sections in the Northeast.
